When Katharina Reimer launched the Karen Leung Foundation in 2013, to raise awareness of gynaecological cancer, she came to realise that the disease had a stigma surrounding it. As well as ensuring that women in treatment have access to optimal care, Katharina and her team aim to educate the local community to promote prevention and early detection but this, they realised, required an element of creativity. Cue The Extra Ordinary Exhibition – Beyond the Surface, an art show exploring self-care and the female body, dreamed up by Katharina in the hope of overcoming the cultural sensitivities often associated with gynaecological health, sparking conversation and thus empowering awareness and disease prevention.
