Mank

A highly anticipated movie, Mank is the film that David Fincher has been preparing his entire life to create. Shot entirely in black and white, Mank is based on the seasoned filmmakers’ iconic Citizen Kane, and does much to dissect its backstory. The screenplay was written by Jack Fincher, the director’s late father, and is oozing with Old Hollywood glamour and memorabilia, featuring a star-studded cast including Lilly Collins, Gary Oldman, Ford Coppola and Amanda Seyfried.

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom

Adapted from the eponymous, Pullitzer-prize winning August Wilson play, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottoms circulates around the legendary “Mother of the Blues” in 1927 Chicago, celebrating the beauty and freedom of true blues music. The film highlights the very real struggle of  prejudices within society, and the rising tensions between Ma Rainey and her white manager and producer. The film is produced by Denzel Washington, starring Academy-Award winning Viola Davis with another stellar performance by the late Chadwick Boseman.

The biographical drama television series follows the late Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, a Texas-born Tejano singer, and her journey to fame. The series takes viewers on the journey that is Selena’s life, including a performance at the Houston Astrodome, the star’s chart-topping albums on the Latin music charts, and the sacrifices that she and her family had to make alongside life-changing decisions.

Bridgerton

Bridgerton is the first series created by producer Shonda Rhimes in her alleged US$150 million deal with Netflix. The period drama is based on the popular book series by Julia Quinn, which has already sold over 10 million copies in the US alone. With a somewhat Gossip Girl-esque character by the name of Lady Whistledown (voiced by the iconic Julie Andrews), the show is expected to be a thrilling rollercoaster of scandals and gossip, alongside stunning set and costume design.

The wildly popular musical has made its film debut in this latest Netflix adaptation produced by Glee’s Ryan Murphy. With a star-studded cast including Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, Awkwafina and Kerry Washington, the movie follows the story of two washed-up Broadway actors as they defend the right of an Indiana girl to take her girlfriend to prom.
