In an era dominated by automation and mass production, one German bed manufacturer stands resolute in its commitment to traditional craftsmanship. For almost 100 years, SCHRAMM has been quietly revolutionising sleep, one handmade mattress at a time. From its 1923 beginnings as an upholstery and saddlery workshop to becoming a leader in luxury sleep systems, SCHRAMM represents a rare marriage of time-honoured tradition and innovative design.

A Bold New Identity

Recently, SCHRAMM unveiled a comprehensive rebranding that eloquently bridges heritage with contemporary design sensibilities. At the heart of this rebrand is SCHRAMM’s new super sign — a single, flowing line that carries the “S” of SCHRAMM at its centre while evoking a cylindrical spring, the heart of their work for over a century. The brand’s tagline, “Uniquely Yours”, perfectly encapsulates their philosophy of creating bespoke sleep systems tailored to each individual’s specific needs.

But perhaps the most striking element of the rebrand is SCHRAMM’s bold embrace of the colour orange, which now paints their campaigns and even their latest GRAND CRU bed. The choice represents a deliberate departure from luxury’s traditional palette.

“The news nowadays, you know, is more negative than positive, and people are a little bit afraid of the future and what is to come. Beige, neutral colours, or black, are always associated with luxury. But people are looking for brightness,” explains Elmar Duffner, SCHRAMM’s Managing Director. “I always think of this golden hour. Orange is such a wonderful colour of light. It holds such emotion. It’s just the right one.”

While the brand’s visual identity has evolved, SCHRAMM’s unwavering commitment to traditional craftsmanship remains unchanged — the foundation upon which its “Uniquely Yours” promise is built.

Nestled in the lush landscape of Winnweiler in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, SCHRAMM’s manufactory employs approximately 200 skilled artisans across its carpentry, technical engineering, upholstery, and tailoring workshops. “Everything is made by hand,” states Duffner.

This commitment to manual craftsmanship isn’t merely nostalgic — it’s strategic. The company’s patented three-mattress GRAND CRU system, one-of-a-kind in the industry, requires the precision and customisation that only skilled human hands can deliver. At its foundation, the brand’s DIVAN base mattress features traditional hourglass springs, meticulously tied and braced by hand using time-honoured upholstery techniques. This creates a dynamic interplay between all three levels – the DIVAN base, the SILHOUETTE intermediate mattress, and the top GRAND CRU N°1 – with each layer working in harmony to respond and adapt to the sleeper’s unique contours.

At the heart of SCHRAMM’s engineering excellence lies its revolutionary spring system. “We are the only manufacturer, the only one, who does springs like this,” explains Alexander Ter Horst, Regional Sales Manager at SCHRAMM. “We make a spring system which we heat at 300 degrees so that the spring remembers what it is. When you don’t heat springs, and you make springs, they will return to their original form — a wire,” Ter Horst explains. This specific heating process not only ensures durability but also demagnetises the metal, making it better for both the environment and the sleeper.

“In SCHRAMM’s mattresses, every pocket is filled with a different firmness of spring, so that it shifts nicely around your body,” Ter Horst states. “It is very much tailor-made. You know, if you are going to make a suit from a luxury tailor, it’s really made for you,” Duffner adds. “We have, in a vertical direction, several zones which take into account your shoulder width, your hip, and your length. Our mattresses come in five firmness levels to accommodate people of different weights. We offer a range of choices so that everybody reaches a state of ultimate comfort.”

Natural Comfort

SCHRAMM exclusively uses natural, breathable materials – silk, linen, sheep wool, cotton wool, and cashmere – sourced locally whenever possible. Crucially, mattress layers are stitched rather than glued, allowing optimal air circulation to transport the half-litre of humidity bodies typically lose during sleep.

When asked about the different approaches in luxury bedding, particularly the use of horsehair by competitors, Ter Horst explains SCHRAMM’s distinct philosophy: “Other brands try to create comfort in the layers on top of the mattress, and not the base. Just like the motor of a car, the spring system is the engine of the bed, and we make the best one there is.” He chuckles, “When we have such a nice spring system, we don’t need to cover it up with too many layers!”

This philosophy extends to SCHRAMM’s positioning in the luxury market. “Luxury is no longer about outward display. It really has to bring a benefit and an advantage,” Duffner says, noting how the bed has become “the only interior product which embraces you for seven to eight hours every day.” The company’s growth coincides with increasing awareness about sleep’s importance to health and performance, a shift validated by their success with Germany’s leading five-star hotels, where guests often seek out dealers after experiencing SCHRAMM mattresses firsthand.

Looking Forward

For Duffner, SCHRAMM’s essence lies in creating products where “passion beats the rationale”, where desire transcends logic. “Passion means ‘I want to have this product. This is just for me.’ And uniquely yours, in the end,” he smiles. With its bold new visual identity and impeccable systems that bridge heritage and innovation, SCHRAMM continues to prove that, in an age of automation, the human touch remains irreplaceable.
