Born in Guangzhou, China, Yulin Kuang migrated to the United States at the age of 3 and spent her formative years in Kansas and New Jersey, continuing to attend Saturday Chinese school. She later pursued creative writing, with a specialisation in screenwriting at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and graduated in 2012. with a specialisation in screenwriting. Kuang is currently based in Los Angeles.

Chosen for Reese Witherspoon’s Book Club in the spring of 2024, the contemporary romance novel was published that same year. In 2024, Kuang shared with Vogue that the story was always intended to focus on a screenwriter and a novelist who have known each other since their high school days. She also found inspiration in the works of Emily Henry, striving to establish a connection between her own writing and Henry’s. She wrote the book concurrently with directing People We Meet on Vacation.

Yulin Kuang received the manuscript for Emily Henry’s 2021 bestseller, People We Meet On Vacation, during the pandemic, even before its publication. This led her to develop the script for the forthcoming film adaptation, directed by Brett Haley. She found the extensive location requirements—more numerous than a James Bond movie—to be an appealing challenge. The film, starring Tom Blyth and Emily Bader, premiered on Netflix on January 9th.

Kuang has been attached to the film adaptation of Henry’s 2020 bestseller, Beach Read, since the beginning and is slated to write the script. As a testament to her dedication towards the project, she even re-read the book in Holland, Michigan—the same location that inspired Emily Henry to write it. Kuang also recently shared that she knew Bridgerton‘s Phoebe Dynevor was perfect for the lead role of January Andrews within five minutes of their meeting.
5. Yulin Kuang is also known for her work on The Healing Powers of Dude and Dollface
Kuang’s work as a screenwriter and director may already be familiar to viewers, thanks to her episodes of Netflix’s The Healing Powers of Dude and Hulu’s Dollface. Dollface starred household names Kat Dennings and Brenda Song, while The Healing Powers of Dude earned a 2020 Daytime Emmy nomination.
6. Yulin Kuang is a recreational figure skater

Inspired by Canadian ice dancers, Yulin Kuang began learning how to figure skate recreationally in 2018. It’s a hobby she only picked up as an adult, but had long dreamed of since she was a child. She finds that skating provides a way to clear her mind and stay grounded. She dedicates five hours to the activity, splitting her time between working with a professional coach on skills and practicing independently.
