美國時尚到底應該要走向怎樣的面向？ 今年 Met Gala 以美國夢為主題，顯然盼望讓全世界重新注目美國時裝的光輝；Tom Ford 年初甚至提議將紐約時裝周改名為美國時裝周，並認為美國時裝工業的未來需要變得更為國際化及全球化。事實上，美國近年面對不同的多元聲音，從 #MeToo 、 Black Lives Matter 到關注亞裔權益等社會議題，時裝業亦致力加入這些風潮；如果要談一種美國夢，多元，正是當代美國價值的核心思想。

於1962 年誕生的 CFDA，目的旨在支持新晉設計師或時裝品牌；於 1984年成為的CFDA Fashion Awards，被譽為時裝界奧斯卡，提名由 CFDA 時尚獎協會董事會成員以及零售商、記者和造型師提交，過去成功發掘 Marc Jacobs、Rick Owen、Alexander Wang、Phillip Lim 及 Prabal Gurung 等不同注目的時尚設計師，讓他們的才華得以展現。
可惜的是，近年 CFDA 的提名名單和得獎者被不同媒體批評得不夠多元化，《紐約時報》更公開指出提名者缺乏新穎性。Tom Ford 在2019年擔任 CFDA 主席時表明立場：「我正在整頓理事會內部的多樣性，無論年紀還是其他，應該全面性地實行。」;而經過近年的多番爭議之後，今屆名單比過往更為包容，以及重視不同領域的時尚品牌，早前更經率先公布部分得獎單位， Patagonia 與 Dapper Dan 分別獲得可持續環境獎與終身成就獎。
