與奧斯卡金像獎地位相符的 2022 年金球獎頒獎典禮，終於在 1 月 10 日香港時間早上 10 點完滿舉行。每逢頒獎當然是有人歡喜有人愁，例如《魷魚遊戲》的李政宰雖然失落影帝，但同劇飾演 001 號參賽者的吳永秀卻成功在眾多大熱人馬之中跑出，包括 HBO 熱門劇集《傳媒家族繼承人》（Succession）的 Kieran Culkin，成為首位奪得「最佳男配角」的韓國演員。而現正在影院上映的《西城故事》也成為大贏家，獲得「歌舞／喜劇組最佳女主角」、「最佳女配角」及「歌舞／喜劇組最佳電影」等殊榮。不過今年卻未有看到任何名人在紅地毯上爭艷鬥麗的境況，而且有關活動的風聲也極低，到底事態為何？
事情始末要追溯到 2021 年 12 月首度公布第 79 屆年度頒獎典禮的入圍名單時，那時除了關於頒獎典禮將如何轉播、其以甚麼形式舉行、以及誰將出席等問題一一湧現，其入圍名單更被受質疑其公信力。因為在尚未公布完整入圍名單前，金球獎面臨多樣性的挑戰，由 87 人組成的 HFPA組織並沒有一位黑人成員，以及接受昂貴禮物疑左右選票等不道德行為而受到審查。
根據 2021 年 2 月份洛杉磯時報指出，自2002年 HFPA 前主席 Meher Tatna 之後，就再也沒有出現過黑人成員。當這一消息被披露後，業內多個媒體組織、演員和創作者譴責了 HFPA，並打算抵制第 79 屆年度頒獎典禮，其中一些名人包括 Scarlett Johansson、Mark Ruffalo、Kerry Washington 和 Tom Cruise 等人。當中 Tom Cruise 更將自己的3個金球獎全部退回。
到了上年 5 月份的時候，美國電影協會對此作出回應，並表示計劃在整個組織內實施變革。該組織宣布了新的臨時首席執行官 Todd Boehly 選舉出新的董事會和增加了一個由 21 名新成員組成的多元化小組，確保有色人種參與其中並做到審查其多元化目標。
儘管如此亞馬遜工作室、Netflix 和 WarnerMedia 及其子公司宣布他們將停止與 HFPA 的活動，直到舉辦單位做出重大改變作出抵制。因此今年大會直接取消了紅地毯環節，也會跳過以往的直播得獎程序，只會簡單在網絡上公佈得獎名單，成為活動舉辦 79 年以來首次沒有名人出席和直播的境況。
