The overlap of Oscars weekend in LA and fashion week in New York was something of a Sophie’s Choice for the world of film and fashion, but Tom Ford didn’t have to choose between the two. Instead, the American fashion designer/filmmaker brought his show to Hollywood where an A-list front row gathered around a beaming, mirrored runway. Last season, Ford took his show underground to the “heart” of New York, the subway, with a collection that nodded to east coast swag. This Autumn/Winter 2020 season, Ford’s move west made a similar sartorial shift to its locale. “For me, it’s very L.A,” he said. “Chic, possibly slightly stoned, and very sensual.”

As such, the show opened with a discourse on west coast style: jersey tops, boho prints, patchwork khaki and denim, and low-rise trousers that hung at the hips and billowed in movement. There was ample silk and satin, as per Ford’s signature, as well as sharp tailoring, which commenced the second half of the show. Towards the finale, the soundtrack transitioned to Killing Me Softly as Ford rolled out the evening glamour: Bella Hadid emerged in a sparkling silver gown with double velvet bows, followed by various sheer lace numbers befitting the more evocative side of the red carpet.
