There are few things I loved more as a child than Greek mythology. I went through the Percy Jackson phase almost everyone seems to have gone through at some point, poring over the books, half-convinced I was secretly a demigod too, quietly disappointed each time I turned twelve and no letter arrived. That early fixation on gods and monsters and impossible journeys never really leaves you. It just goes quiet for a while, waiting for a reason to come back.

This summer gave it one. Zendaya spent her entire press tour for The Odyssey draped in one goddess gown after another, a gauzy Louis Vuitton with a laurel-leaf bodice, a Schiaparelli breastplate, a Valentino tunic in sage and taupe, each look pulled directly from Athena’s wardrobe rather than her own.

It isn’t a new language, really. No one did “Grecian” better, or first, than Madame Grès, through ‘50s turned fabric into something closer to sculpture than clothing. Her house doesn’t produce those pieces anymore, but nearly every draped gown owes her a debt, through Halston’s fluid ‘70s silhouettes, and Versace’s liquid-chainmail goddesses in the ‘90s, and now, apparently, through us again.

Whether you’re dressing for a black-tie wedding or a very ambitious Euro summer, there’s a myth, and a dress, in here for you.

Made For The Chase

Artemis was never still for long. She belonged to forests and moonlit hunts, not ballrooms, and I like to imagine she’d have found most formalwear intolerable, all that fabric getting in the way of moving freely. This ivory cape-draped maxi feels like the exception she might have made: it moves the way she would have wanted to move, unhurried but never restrained, drifting rather than clinging.

Cursed, But Make It Pretty

If you’ve ever ridden Mystic Manor at Hong Kong Disneyland, you’ve met Medusa before you knew her story — a portrait of a strikingly beautiful girl that comes alive as your carriage passes, snakes lunging out from her hair at exactly the moment you least expect it. It’s a great scare, and for a long time, it was the only version of her I knew: monster first, nothing else after. It took years, and a lot more reading, to learn she was once said to be the most beautiful of her sisters, before Athena’s curse turned that beauty into something people feared rather than admired. This mint Madalena dress feels closer to that overlooked version of her soft, quietly striking, the kind of pretty that sneaks up on you rather than announces itself. Wear it somewhere you want people to look, carefully.

Winning Before You Walk In

A friend of mine once, mid-round  of a Greek mythology trivia game, saw Nike come up as an answer and gasped, “Wait, is there a goddess called Adidas too?” I still bring it up whenever I can. Nike came first, by a couple thousand years, and she never needed a swoosh to prove it. This plissé chiffon gown with its metallic collar, carries that same understated certainty, pleats that catch the light like they’re doing it on purpose (they probably are). Whoever wears this gets to consider it a win in itself, don’t you think?

A Little Skeptical Of Heroes

I watched Hercules for the first time when I was thirteen, and I don’t think I ever really got over it. I cried more than I’d like to admit (I still do, if anyone’s watching), and it was always Megara who undid me most. There was something in her, that guardedness, that refusal to be anyone’s damsel, that felt more honest than anything else in the film. At least out loud, I won’t say I’m in love… with this dress, but I think she would have worn it well. Draped grey-taupe jersey, gold chain straps catching the light without asking for it, the kind of quiet self-possession that never needed saving in the first place.

Born From Sea-Foam, Somehow Blow-Dried

Aphrodite was born from sea foam and somehow arrived looking finished, unbothered, as though the whole dramatic entrance had cost her nothing. This pink Larisa maxi dress has that same soft, unhurried quality. Nothing about it looks like it’s working hard to be beautiful, which I think is exactly what she would have wanted.

One Bitten Shoulder Later

Demeter’s whole domain was growth, harvests, things coming back to life after winter, but even goddesses have their off days. When Persephone was taken to the underworld, Demeter was so consumed by grief that, during a dinner with the other gods, she absentmindedly took a bite out of Pelops’ shoulder before realising what she was eating (he was later restored, ivory shoulder and all). It’s a strange, oddly human detail for a goddess otherwise defined by nurture and abundance, proof that even she had her distracted, unravelled moments. This printed dress carries both sides of her: soft and blooming at first glance, with just enough looseness in the fabric to suggest someone who might, on the right day, not be entirely paying attention.

Athena’s the reason this entire article exists, honestly — between Zendaya’s Odyssey press tour and a goddess whose signature move is always glamour made elegant. This ivory halterneck gown, with its jeweled waist doing double duty as a belt and a breastplate, is the closest thing here to actual battle-ready glamour.

In The Odyssey, Poseidon spends the better part of ten years trying to drown Odysseus for blinding his son, storms conjured out of pure spite, a homecoming stretched into a decade of near-death. He is, by any measure, one of the more destructive figures in the whole epic. Which makes it almost funny that this dusty-blue Sahra gown, with its long draped cap sleeves, is so soft, so entirely without menace.

Hera ran the entire pantheon and never once raised her voice, a look from her simply sufficed. This ivory Isabella gown has main-character energy in the most quietly terrifying way: clean lines, zero decoration, the kind of dress that makes an entrance without doing anything so embarrassing as trying.

Welcome To The Underworld — There’s A Dresscode

In Hercules, Hades is meant to be the villain, but he’s also the funniest person in the room, all sarcasm and theatrical despair, needling Megara even in the middle of his own scheming. I’ve always thought that’s the most interesting version of him: dark, but never entirely serious about it. This black monogram knot dress has the same dry wit built in. Pleated, a little severe at first glance, but the length keeps it from ever taking itself too seriously.
