Black Mirror: Season 5


The much-awaited fifth season of Netflix’s long-running dystopian anthology series debuts on June 5. This season is comprised of three entries: Smithereens, which follows the events that transpire when a cab driver holds his passenger hostage; Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too, which stars Miley Cyrus as singer Ashley O who is exploited by her record label to create seemingly sentient companion robots marketed to teenage girls; and Striking Vipers, about the ill effects that VR escapist technology has on a couple trying to conceive. Also starring Anthony Mackie, Topher Grace and Pom Klementieff.

The Chef Show


A boisterous counterpoint to Chef’s Table, this docu-series follows actor-director Jon Favreau and chef Roy Choi as they criss-cross America to partake in the nation’s more indulgent dishes. They star alongside entertainment and culinary royalty, including the cast of The Avengers, Aaron Franklin of Austin’s acclaimed smoked brisket spot Franklin Barbecue, Momofuku’s David Chang, and Gwyneth Paltrow. Airs June 7.

I Am Mother

Hilary Swank plays a leading role in this original sci-fi thriller from Netflix. Set in the distant future after the extinction of mankind, the film follows a teenage girl (Clara Rugaard) who has been raised by a robot called Mother (Rose Byrnes) in an effort to repopulate the Earth, and to her knowledge is the only human left. However, when a stranger (Swank) breaks into the facility bearing a message, it changes everything that Daughter knows to be true, in the process turning Mother against the human pair. Airs June 7.

Always Be My Maybe

Ali Wong and Randall Park of Fresh Off The Boat wrote and starred in this raunchy rom-com in what is yet another coup for Asian-American representation in Hollywood. Wong plays Sasha Tran, a successful chef who runs into a childhood friend (Park) at a turning point in her life with whom she has a long and complicated relationship with. They begin to gravitate towards each other again, yet contenders for Sasha’s attention (Keanu Reeves, no less) threaten the budding romance. Now airing on Netflix.

Black Spot

Making easy comparisons with Dark, another Netflix offering centred around mysterious murders and disappearances in a small European town, Black Spot follows prosecutor Franck Siriani (Laurent Capelluto) who arrives in the French town of Villefranche to look into the abnormally high murder rate. He’s joined by head of the local police Laurène Weiss (Suliane Brahim) to investigate several murder cases that usually take place over the course of an episode. As they solve each mystery, they’re led closer to the ultimate truth behind the unsettling happenings that occur within the vicinity of this godforsaken town. Now airing on Netflix.

The Black Godfather


Cited as the original influencer, Clarence Avant has played a pivotal role in the production of the most successful hits in the American music and film industries. He’s getting his due in The Black Godfather, which pays tribute to Avant’s hugely influential career which came about at a time of massive racial injustice during the Jim Crow era. A slew of pop culture figures sound off on Avant’s presence in their lives, including the likes of Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, Snoop Dogg and P. Diddy. Airs June 7.
