Anne Hathaway is no stranger to a fashion renaissance. Whether it be Mia Theromopolis’ transformation from a klutzy San Francisco schoolgirl into the Princess of Genova in The Princess Diaries or Andy Sachs’ fashion butterfly moment in The Devil Wears Prada, the actress has experienced her fair share of Cinderella-esque metamorphoses in the shoes of her iconic characters.

Off-screen, her sartorial evolution has also been nothing short of magical. At the premiere of the highly-anticipated sequel to The Devil Wears Prada, the Oscar-winning actress made her entrance in a figure-baring Versace dress. While minimalistic silhouettes and streamlined tailoring have characterised her everyday style of late, Hathaway has made it clear that she is not afraid to go bold in bright colours and snazzy prints. Cue: the sparkling Valentino PP Pink minidress and the multicoloured Christopher John Rogers three-piece suit. Needless to say, Anne Hathaway would not be getting the Andy treatment from Miranda Priestly. Here is Anne Hathaway’s fashion evolution in five outfits.

Even as a young starlet, Hathaway knew how to dress up right. At the 60th Golden Globes, a little over a year after The Princess Diaries came out, Hathaway strutted in with a gorgeous Elie Saab dress. The hot pink dress had a sparkling floral bustier and floral embellishments on her shoulder and ribs. The light, flowy train made it even more Y2K-ethereal. No makeover was needed here.

Hathaway has always been classy with her fashion. Exhibit A: this Armani Privé dress she wore to the 2009 Oscars. The elegant dress is beaded with jewels in diagonal stripes and fans out into a mermaid train lined with transparent discs that glimmer. Added with a chocolate-brown cylinder clutch and a tied-up bun, and you have an Oscar-winning outfit.

This isn’t Hathaway’s first Met Gala, but it certainly was the first time she felt fully confident at the event, and we’re not surprised why. Hathaway’s sleek golden gown was custom made by Ralph Lauren, featuring a hood sitting lightly over her head. The theme of the 2015 Met Gala was “China: Through the Looking Glass”, and Hathaway said she was inspired by a Buddha statue to create the dress with Ralph Lauren. You can call it simple, but the dress made Hathaway stood out from a lot of other gold dresses that night.

By 2022, Anne Hathaway has had a 20-year long career full of iconic moments in pop culture. So she used it to her advantage and gave the people what they wanted. At the Michael Kors Spring/Summer 2023 fashion show, Hathaway arrived in bangs and a brown leather trench coat. Ringing any bells? It was strikingly similar to the outfit her character Andy wore at the end of The Devil Wears Prada. We love when actresses can be self-referential.

Now in her 40s, Hathaway knows she’s a fashion icon. But she’s still a very astute fashion student. At the 2025 Met Gala, she wore a Carolina Herrera ensemble that symbolised the label’s friendship with André Leon Talley, one of Vogue’s leaders in the 80s and 90s. The white collared shirt was an homage to Talley, who always wore them under his signature double-breasted suits. The black-and-white column skirt is a recurring element in Carolina Herrera’s collections, and Hathaway wears one embellished with 200,000 beads and rhinestones. And of course, she wore a scene-stealing sapphire and diamond necklace to tie it all together.
