今年初夏，在西九自由空間上演了一場別開生面的舞蹈與多媒體演出——《Carte Blanche to Christian Rizzo》，不只是法國編舞大師 Christian Rizzo 遙距策劃的項目，更是法國珠寶世家 Van Cleef & Arpels 對當代舞蹈熱誠的最佳實證。

說 Van Cleef & Arpels 與舞蹈的關係始於由衷的熱情一點不為過。世家家族成員 Louis Arpels 是位狂熱芭蕾愛好者，早在 1920 年代，他就經常帶同外甥 Claude Arpels 到巴黎歌劇院欣賞芭蕾舞蹈。而世家第一款以芭蕾為主題的作品在 1940 年代應運而生：以玫瑰切割鑽石成為舞者的臉龐，輔以珍貴的頭飾；芭蕾舞裙則由鑽石或彩色寶石組成，生動地表達舞者的靈動與優美姿態，不但從此成為世家備受讚賞的經典，也將 Van Cleef & Arpels 對舞蹈的熱愛，以獨到的工藝幻化成炫目的珠寶藝術。

而說到 Van Cleef & Arpels 與舞蹈的情愫，又怎能不提傳奇編舞大師 George Balanchine？在舞蹈藝術浸淫下長大的 Claude Arpels， 於 1961 年認識了 George Balanchine（其時他也是 New York City Ballet 的創辦人之一），二人對寶石的共同熱情催生了作品《Jewels》，由祖母綠、紅寶石和鑽石的光芒啟發的芭蕾三部曲，並配上三位偉大作曲家的作品，包括 Gabriel Fauré（祖母綠）、Igor Stravinsky（紅寶石） 以及 Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky（鑽石）。

當然，今天《Jewels》經已成為經典芭蕾劇目（去年世家更與香港芭蕾舞團合作將此作重現）。但被稱為美國芭蕾之父的 George Balanchine，其時是極為前衛的編舞家，在傳統芭蕾技術中融入了不同舞蹈的影響，形成獨創的風格：而細看《Jewels》 選用的作曲家 Gabriel Fauré、Igor Stravinsky，都是 20 世紀之始最前衛的音樂大師（像 Stravinsky 的作品就曾經前衛得叫保守的觀眾受不住離場），由此可見 Claude Arpels 並沒有死守於傳統，並以自身影響力成就帶實驗性、具時代意義的作品，並身體力行，支持正在努力寫下歷史新一頁的當代藝術家。

這種敢於冒險並愛才的精神，可說是成為了 Van Cleef & Arpels 的 DNA，一直延續至今。自 2012 年來世家一直支持由法國舞蹈家及編舞家 Benjamin Millepied 創建的洛杉磯舞蹈團 （L.A. Dance Project），並通過與 Fedora 慈善團體的合作， 鼓勵舞蹈創作領域的創新和新進人才。2015 年成立、一年一度的 《Fedora – Van Cleef & Arpels》芭蕾舞獎，就曾嘉許了不少優秀的嶄新芭蕾舞作品。

2020 年世家更進一步，成立了 Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels 企劃，成為藝術家及機構創作新銳舞蹈劇目的強大後盾，並每年在世界各地發表大型活動。這次在西九上演的《Carte Blanche to Christian Rizzo》正是其中之一。

Christian Rizzo 於 2021 年成為了 Dance Reflections 企 劃的一份子，假如對這位當代編舞大師有些微認識的，必定也會認同前文提到、Van Cleef & Arpels 的冒險與創新精神。來自法國中部城市 Toulouse 的 Christian Rizzo，在成為編舞家前組過 rock band、創立過時裝品牌、當過多媒體藝術家，並在 1996 年創立多媒體藝術組織 Fragile，結合表演、裝置、舞蹈等不同範疇的創作;編舞同時，Rizzo 也經常受委託為表演設計背景音樂及戲服，可說是周身刀、張張利。

在當代藝術世界中，各範疇的創作界線愈見模糊，這種碰撞也容許更多新意念誕生。這次隨着世家登陸香港的《Carte Blanche to Christian Rizzo》 也不例外。 空間成為畫布，Christian Rizzo 與巴黎燈光及場景設計師 Caty Olive 聯合創作藝術裝置 《100% polyester, objet dansant n ° 57》(1999)， 令衣物跟隨聲音和燈光擺動，上演「無身體」的舞蹈，引領觀眾在 15 分 鐘的默想片刻、虛構旅程之中，反思對不存在與不可見的體會。 除此之外，今次展覽亦包含兩個舞蹈影像作品，將於場地內同時播放。 其中片長約 32 分鐘的《TTT: tourcoing-taipei-tokyo》 (2009–2011)為 Christian Rizzo 與視覺藝術家江元皓聯合製作，由三組影像組成，分別與法國北部小鎮圖爾寬(Tourcoing)、 台北和東京此三個城市相關，結合動作捕捉(motion-capture)、 虛擬與實景混合等多媒體元素，探索身體、動態和空間三者的關係，建構出極簡抽象而富詩意的境界。

時光倒流 100 年—— 當 Louis Arpels 看着舞者於台上的優美步姿而感動時，相信難以想像他對舞蹈單純的熱情將成為 21 世紀當代藝術的重要推動力。但就如德國哲學家 Georg Hegel 所言: Nothing great in the world has ever been accomplished without passion——光芒之始，在於熱誠。
