Nothing signifies that summer is in full swing quite like Wimbledon. This year, people from all around the world once again flocked to the All England Club to witness the two-week-long event, which culminated in yesterday’s gripping men’s final between Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz as the former earned his first Wimbledon final victory.
Fashion plays a significant role at Wimbledon, which has always held a certain air of that classy, British glamour. Attendees lounge on the grass or in the stands in understated designer-wear (recognisable brand logos being strictly banned), sipping from glasses of champagne and indulging in strawberries and cream—it is, to say the least, a distinctly British affair.
Aside from the thrill of watching the sport itself, the event also implicitly emblematises a posh and quietly luxurious lifestyle, which is epitomised in Ralph Lauren, Wimbledon’s official outfitter. The brand was the first to partner with the All England Club in 2006, developing a navy-blue and cream uniform for on-court officials, and has since been a key sponsor for the sporting event. While the official Wimbledon colours are dark green and purple, there has been an all-white dress code for players since 1963, and many spectators similarly adhere to this colour-scheme when planning their outfits for attending the tournament. Tennis-core reached its peak after Zendaya’s red carpet looks for Challengers (2024) took the world by storm, and while the immediate hype has largely died down, its appeal nonetheless lingers. Tennis-core encapsulates the idle pleasures of basking in the summer sun, a kind of pastoral retreat from the monotonous gloom of British winters and stuffy corporate offices, and it is the allure of this lifestyle that truly lends the aesthetic its signature timelessness.
