Before she became Hong Kong’s darling as late Canto-pop diva Anita Mui on-screen, Louise Wong was already a darling in fashion. At the mere age of 16, Wong began her journey as a model when she won the Elite Model Look Asia Pacific regional contest and remains the only Hong Kong person to achieve this accolade. Having walked runways across the world, she has become a favourite among the likes of luxury heavyweights such as Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Shanghai Tang and Saint Laurent.

She was selected to star in Anita after a three-year search

Louise Wong did not land her breakout role in Anita in the most conventional fashion. Without any experience in acting, dancing or singing, Wong was cast through social media after a three-year search by Edko Films which involved the audition of over 3000 actors. Wong was offered to play Anita Mui after moving the production team to tears in an audition where she sang the late singer’s “Sunset Melodies”, and trained for six months before making her acting debut in the highly-anticipated biopic.

She has been nominated for the Hong Kong Film Awards 2022

For her widely lauded performance in Anita, Wong has been nominated for two awards: Best New Performer and Best Actress, alongside big names in film and television such as Chrissie Chau and Gong Li.

The movie Antia has been nominated for a total of 12 awards, including Best Film, Best Director for Longman Leung and Best Supporting Actor for Louis Koo as fashion designer Eddie Lau, among others.

She thinks her personality is similar to Anita Mui’s

I think [Anita Mui and I] both have a bright personality. We are both “older sisters” in the sense that we love to take care of people”, Wong shares in a Vogue Hong Kong exclusive as the cover star of our March 3rd anniversary issue.

Apart from a likeness in facial features and aura, the model-turned-actress shares more similarities to Anita Mui than what meets the eye. Like the late Canto-pop legend, Wong came from humble beginnings and was also raised in a single-parent family by her mum. Wong’s career trajectory also somewhat mirrored that of Mui’s: Mui achieved her first big break in music by signing with Capital Artists Records after winning the first New Talent Singing Awards, while Wong found her calling as a model after winning the Elite Model Look contest.

She is married to local artist Sheldon Lo

After dating for 5 years, Wong tied the knot with Australian-born Hong Kong artist Sheldon Lo, who most notably placed first and third in the TVB International Chinese New Talent Singing Championship and The Voice 2 Hong Kong respectively, and is now a member of pop-rock band Harbor Homme. In marrying Wong, Lo officially became the step-father of Wong’s seven-year-old daughter Affa, whom she had when she was 24.
