Paint It Black

Gothic tones and swatches of ink-black leave a sinister impression. Models (and Lady Gaga) donned punkish vinyl black lips and dramatic eye shadow at the Marc Jacobs AW16 show; there were smudged, oil-spill lips at Gareth Pugh SS17; and graphic eyeliner at Yohji Yamamoto AW16.

Harajuku Girls

Looking for something a little bit more Kawaii this Halloween? Channel the Harajuku vibes from Jeremy Scott and Anna Sui, supercharged by electric neons and animated eye makeup designs that give you a doll-like youthfulness. Opt for rainbow-hued, voluminous wigs for added impact.

Wicked Flappers

It was the roaring ‘20s meets Corpse Bride on the John Galliano AW08 runway while Pat McGrath gave models a menacing Flapper girl look at Christian Dior AW09. To get the look, draw on pencil-thin eyebrows and extra-defined cupid-bow lips, and feel free to colour outside of the lines to recreate the ghoulish eyeshadow looks.

Cleopatra

There’s perhaps no makeup look as recognisable as Cleopatra’s cat-eye. Pat McGrath paid homage to Egyptian royalty with her iconic makeup looks for the Christian Dior haute couture SS04 show. The queen of beauty fashioned another iteration on the Valentino SS20 runway, this time with an elevated, pared-back look using gold jewels on eyes.

It’s a Barbie World

Jeremy Scott’s Moschino takes playing dress-up to the literal extreme. Whether it’s Barbie, soap opera divas, or dress-up dolls, the flamboyant designer’s fashion designs are always complete with theatrically big hair, extra glam makeup and pouty pink lips.

The Queen Is Dead

Marie Antoinette had a date with The Joker at Thom Browne’s SS14 show, where models appeared with dusty bouffants, powder-white complexions, and smudged lipstick and eyeshadow. Vivienne Westwood’s SS14 show also featured ghostly complexions with unnerving swatches of black and red, whereas Dior’s Couture show in 2004 gave us another taste of Elizabethan macabre.

Blade Runner

Razor sharp lines thanks to face contouring and hair styles channel the gritty, Neo-noir visuals of the cult film Blade Runner. For AW19, Rick Owens teamed up with 18-year-old makeup artist Salvia to create dystopian, sci-fi looks and Givenchy paired straight-cut bobs with otherworldly metallic lips and contoured cheeks, while both Dries Van Noten SS20 and Jean Paul Gaultier Haute Couture AW09 nodded to the iconic mask-like eyeshadow look.
