Dark romance was an undeniable trend on the Autumn/Winter 2019 runways, where designers gave motifs of unqualified femininity a sinister twist. Roses, lace, and fuschia pink were married with leather and profuse panels of black at Alexander McQueen, Erdem, and Christopher Kane, while dark lips and silky black numbers allured at Paco Rabanne, Simone Rocha, and Marni, whose bondage-like body chains added an extra layer of grunge. At Prada, we saw Wednesday Addams and Frankenstein alongside dainty cocktail dresses with wilted silk roses, while Valentino debuted gowns donning red roses and lovelorn statues. Pouffy sleeves and sweet florals were taken to the dark side at Marc Jacobs and Richard Quinn, as Comme des Garçons and Rodarte rendered volume in leather and sculptural armour-like shoulders.
