Chungking Express is a lesson about love and loss. It tells the stories of two heartbroken cops and explores the emotion of desire through a series of chance encounters and “what ifs”. The use of a handheld camera breathes a disorienting air into the production, creating an element of rawness and verisimilitude.

This film follows the protagonist, Yuddy, (portrayed by Leslie Cheung) and his misfortune with the women in his life. Romantically, he does not seem to reciprocate any strong feelings of affection towards the women whom he had developed relationships with. And he embarks on an aimless mission to connect with his birth mother after learning that his own had adopted him.

In true Wong Kar Wai style, the vivid use of colour and unconventional camera angles in this film detail the ongoings of two storylines that merge into one another. The cleaner of a solitary assassin (who does not cross paths with him) develops an obsession with our protagonist whilst a delinquent follows a girl’s pursuit in reuniting with her ex-lover.
