Inspired by Welsh writer Sarah Waters’ 2002 novel Fingersmith, The Handmaiden (2016) is a South Korean psychological thriller about an illicit love affair in Japanese-occupied Korea between a Japanese heiress and her Korean maid, who turns out to be a con-woman. The film was selected to compete for the Palme d’Or at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival upon its premiere, and took home Best Actress, Best New Actress and Best Art Direction at the 37th Blue Dragon Film Awards. At the 11th Asian Film Awards, it also won Best Supporting Actress, Best Newcomer, Best Costume Design and Best Production Design.
