The 33rd edition of Art Taipei returns at the end of October. This year, technology is taking the spotlight. Under the theme of “Symbiosis”, the fair proposes that art and technology are hyperconnected and interdependent.

In terms of curation, the digital-focused theme has brought to the fore artworks involving machine learning creative processes and reflections on the digital age. In the Indigenous Art Exhibition Area, Taiwanese artist Tuan Mu’s Calligrapedia #7 is exhibited in collaboration with the Asia Art Centre. The artist trains machine learning models with archives of classic Chinese calligraphy drafts to create inkjet prints of ‘human-machine’ hybrid characters. Singapore’s Prestige Gallery brings Ting Liu’s Stars, which explores pixelation and human perception in a screen-dominated era.

Beyond its digital-focused theme, the art fair is introducing an AI-powered visitor on its official website for the first time. Notably, it will recommend routes through the fair and provide multilingual guidance.

Art Taipei anchors Taipei Art Week, the city’s annual citywide celebration that began in 2024, which connects galleries, museums, foundations, and cultural organisations.

Claudia Chen, Chairperson of the Taiwan Art Gallery Association, said: “This year, Art Taipei will not only introduce an AI-powered visitor assistant on its official website to make art more accessible, but will also deepen its connection with Taipei Art Week and its theme, ‘Velocity’.”

She continues, “Art finds its voice here, technology comes into dialogue with creativity, and the city comes alive.”
